Men’s health: Gauge your health with these screenings

Studies show Men live shorter lives with a lower average quality of life than women. More than half of all premature deaths among men are preventable. A healthy lifestyle not only changes your body. It changes your mind, your attitude & your mood. What are the most important screenings to gauge men’s health?

Regular health screenings play a vital role in overall health and wellbeing. Even if you feel fine, regular health checkups can avoid serious health risks in the future. The purpose of the screenings is:

  • For encouraging a healthy lifestyle
  • To assess the risk of developing a health condition in the future.
  • To screen for recent medical issues and get help in case of any illness.

SCREENINGS TO KEEP YOU HEALTHY:

1.Bodyweight:

men's health

Be smart, eat smart. Whatever your problem is, the answer is not in the fridge.

Excess body weight can lead to serious health risks like diabetes and heart disease in men. BMI measures your body fat in terms of your weight and height. It can accurately determine if you are over-weight or risk of being obese. An adult BMI between 18.5 and 25 is within the normal range.

2. Blood pressure:

Blood Pressure is an important parameter affecting men’s health. Keep a check on your blood pressure. According to (AHA) American heart association, the normal range of blood pressure is 120-140 mmHg (systolic) and 60-80 mmHg (Diastolic).

High blood pressure is termed as a silent killer, as it seldom shows any symptoms till it’s done serious damage to the vital organs of our body like the heart and kidney. The blood pressure should be checked every 2 years. If you have a comorbidity as high blood sugar or heart disease or if the systolic (upper reading) is in the range 120-139 mmHg & diastolic reading (lower reading) is 80-89 mmHg, the blood pressure should be checked every year.

If the top number is greater than 140, or the bottom number is greater than 90, schedule an appointment with your physician.

3.Know your lipids:

men's health Cholesterol levels affect men’s health significantly. AHA Recommends men over 35 to check their cholesterol levels every 3 years. High cholesterol predisposes a number of diseases like heart disease, diabetes & stroke. The results will indicate your levels of HDL (good cholesterol), LDL (bad cholesterol) &Triglycerides

The screening should begin early at the 20s if you have the following risk factors:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • History of stroke, heart disease or diabetes in the first-degree family members

Look for triglyceride levels which should be ideally below 100 mg/dl. A healthy total cholesterol goal should be below 200 mg/dl. Ideally, HDL value should be high and LDL should be low for a healthy heart.

4.Diabetes Screening:

men's health

Diabetes screening is essential to gauge men’s health. If your blood pressure is above 135/80 mm Hg or if you have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25, you should be screened for diabetes. Tests for diabetes include

  • Fasting blood glucose (normal blood sugar level less than 100 mg/dl)-A fasting blood sugar level from 100 to
  • 125 mg/dl is considered prediabetes. If it’s 126 mg/dl or higher on two separate tests, you have diabetes.
  • Random blood glucose- Normal random glucose test in an average adult are 79–160 mg/dl, between 160–200 mg/dl is considered pre-diabetes, and > 200 mg/dl is considered diabetes
  • If blood sugar levels are above normal, u need to get Hb1AC & oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) done as directed by the physician.

5. Colorectal cancer screening:

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in Men affecting men’s health. Cases of colorectal cancer are increasing majorly due to our unhealthy lifestyle and diet. Colon cancers can begin as a small growth and can be silent for a long time without causing any alarming symptoms. Over time, this growth can turn into a cancerous growth. If diagnosed early it can be effectively managed.

LIFESTYLE RISK FACTORS FOR COLON CANCER:

  • Diet high in saturated fats, high red meat consumption in the diet and low fiber intake
  • Being physically inactive or obese.
  • Smoking
  • Heavy drinker( more than 4 drinks a day)

Colonoscopy is a reliable procedure to check for any growth in the intestine, the doctors can find and remove precancerous growths before they become malignant.

Screening for colorectal cancer using fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy in adults should begin at age 50 years and continue until age 75 years. A healthy diet rich in fiber and a good water intake early in the 20s ensures a healthy gut in men.

6. Depression:

avoid depression: men's health

Although depression is more common in women over the age of 30 due to growing responsibilities and increasing work stress, men often feel subjected to a depression early in life. Feeling hopeless or experiencing loss of interest in things you normally enjoy for more than 2 weeks may signal depression.

Don’t overlook these symptoms of feeling down or try to fight it on your own. Your doctor can screen you for depression and help determine how to treat it.

Feeling healthy & feeling good about yourself is not a luxury- It’s an absolute necessity. It’s never too early or too late to work towards being the healthiest you.”
